RIS Newsletter - October 23, 2017

Greetings from Rockdale Intermediate School!
Looking at everything that will happen at RIS it is clear that this is going to be a crazy week!
We will be observing Red Ribbon Week with a dress up day each day. Students are asked to dress as follows:
  • Monday - Sock it to Drugs! (Wear crazy socks)
  • Tuesday -  Super Heroes Don't Do Drugs! (Wear super hero t-shirts)
  • Wednesday - Red Day (Wear red clothing)
  • Thursday - Drugs Can't Find Me! (Wear camo clothing)
  • Friday - Vocabulary Parade

Our school wide vocabulary parade will be on Friday, October 27th at 1:30 in the afternoon. The Vocabulary Parade is part of Rockdale Intermediate’s ongoing effort to increase word recognition and academic vocabulary among our students.  The parade concept is based on Debra Frasier’s book, Miss Alaineus, A Vocabulary Disaster, where a student confuses the word “miscellaneous” for the person, Miss Alaineus.  This embarrassing mistake is turned into a winning costume at the Vocabulary Parade.

Students are encouraged to select a word which will become their costume.  All costumes must be based on a vocabulary word that has been approved by the child’s teacher in advance. Remember, this is NOT a Halloween Costume event.  All costumes must be based on approved vocabulary words. If you would like more information on the book or the parade, you can visit Ms. Frasier’s website at www.debrafrasier.com.  She has ideas for words and costumes.

Help us make vocabulary building into a Parade of Words.  You will be surprised at the creativity and enthusiasm this activity brings out.   If you would like to watch the parade, please join us in the intermediate cafeteria at 1:30.  Students will walk across the stage to display their costume.  We will have designated areas for parents to sit.  Thank you in advance for your support.

We will also participate in the PTO Fall Festival on Saturday at Rockdale Fair Park from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm. There will be something for everyone so we hope to see you there. Students will have a chance to dunk me in the dunking booth. Not sure if that is a good thing or not but I'll do just about anything for the kids on my campus. Should be a memorable time for all.

Have a great week!
